Diving, a highly charming water sport, attracts the attention of countless people with its unique skills and elegant posture. From the moment the athlete takes off from the equipment, a spectacular performance in the air begins, until the moment they enter the water, completing this seamless and wonderful process.

1、 Long and profound development history

The origin of diving can be traced back to ancient Greece in the 5th century BC, when diving patterns appeared on vases. In the 17th century, the activity of jumping into the water from the shore and mast was prevalent in ports along the Scandinavian Peninsula, Mediterranean, and Red Sea coasts. Modern competitive diving evolved from freestyle diving and originated in Germany. In 1900, diving made its debut on the Olympic stage, and the brilliant performance of Swedish athletes opened the chapter of modern competitive diving. In the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, diving was officially listed as a competitive event, and since then, the rules have been continuously improved and the events have gradually become more diverse. In 1912, women’s events were added, and in 2000, synchronized diving became an official Olympic event. In China, modern competitive diving was introduced in the early 20th century and developed vigorously after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It gradually formed a unique style and achieved excellent results in international competitions, becoming an advantageous sport in China.

2、 Rich and diverse project classifications

Diving is divided into two categories: competitive and non competitive. Competitive diving encompasses both competitive diving and high-altitude diving, with competitive diving being an official Olympic event that includes springboard diving (1-meter and 3-meter springboard) and platform diving (5-meter, 7.5-meter, and 10 meter platform). High altitude diving is extremely thrilling, as athletes take off from specially designed super high platforms or cliffs, complete aerial movements, and then enter the water. However, due to its high level of danger, it is not widely carried out worldwide. Non competitive diving includes practical, recreational, and performance diving to meet the needs of different scenarios and purposes, such as practical diving in production, military, and rescue, recreational diving for daily fitness and entertainment, and performance diving after grand festivals or competitions. The performance projects include figure, stunt, and humorous diving, and even incorporate competitive diving movements to bring rich visual experiences to the audience.

3、 Strict and standardized competition rules

The diving competition is divided into single and double events for men’s and women’s 10 meter platform and 3-meter springboard, with a total of 8 gold medals. The competition process includes run-up, takeoff, aerial skills, and diving stages. The rules clearly stipulate that men’s individual and doubles events will have 6 movements, while women’s events will have 5 movements, and there must be no repeated movements. There are specific requirements for the selection of movements in springboard and platform competitions, while synchronized diving and synchronized diving emphasize the quality of movements. There are age restrictions for participants, and those under the age of Group B (14 years old) are not allowed to participate in the Olympic diving competition. International competitions usually have preliminaries, semifinals, and finals, and the order of appearance is determined by computer random drawing. The results do not accumulate with each other. There are 7-person and 5-person scoring systems for referees, and the scores are evaluated based on the performance of athletes at each stage. The calculation method varies depending on the number of referees, and the final ranking is determined based on the total score.

4、 Unique professional terminology

Diving movements are represented by specific codes, and each group of movements has a corresponding number. The action numbers for groups 1-4 are three digits, with the first digit representing the action group, the second digit indicating the presence or absence of a flying action, and the third digit representing the number of somersault cycles. The fifth rotation action is a 4-digit number, representing the group, direction of rotation, number of rotations, and number of rotations. The sixth group of arm standing movements is also a 3-digit number, similar to the rules. The movements are also divided into 6 groups, based on standing before takeoff and the direction of body movement after takeoff. There are four types of aerial postures: straight, bent, knee hugging, and any combination of somersault and rotation. The difficulty coefficient of the action is determined based on the action group, competition event, equipment height, posture, and number of somersaults and rotations. Simple actions have lower difficulty coefficients, while complex actions have higher difficulty coefficients. The difficulty coefficient of the same action varies depending on the height of the equipment.

5、 Important precautions

Pre diving health check ups are essential. Patients with heart disease, hypertension, lung disease, as well as those with severe colds, infectious diseases, and women’s menstrual periods should not dive. Eating full or on an empty stomach is not suitable, it is advisable to do it about an hour after a meal. Adequate preparation for activities is necessary, including moving the limbs, waist, head and neck, and joints to ensure safety and improve diving performance.

From its origin to development, from project classification to competition rules, diving exhibits unique charm and profound connotations. Whether it is the exciting competition of athletes on the field, or the spirit of challenging oneself and pursuing excellence contained in it, diving has become a shining pearl in the field of sports.
